MARDI is an R&D institution established to develop and promote cutting edge technologies for the advancement of food and agriculture industries. It also carries out research to generate innovative technologies for the development of those industries.

 

MARDI provides consultancy and technical services as well as offers joint ventures and licensing arrangements for the commercialization of research results. Focus areas include:
• Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering – developing new crop varieties that cannot be easily produced through conventional breeding.
• Bio-Processing – the use of biological materials, such as microorganisms and enzymes, and even plant and animal cells, to catalyze the conversion of raw materials to value-added food and non-food products.
• Bio-Diagnostics & Bio-Safety – the production and development of locallymade diagnostic apparatus for the agriculture, food and environment sectors. Emphasis is given to the
development of biosensors, immunodiagnostic and DNA-based diagnostics as well as the assessment of GMO food products.

Established on 1 January 1998, the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) is custodian of the rubber industry in Malaysia. The primary objective of MRB is to assist in the development and modernization of the Malaysian rubber industry in all aspects, from cultivation of the rubber tree, the extraction and processing of its raw rubber, the manufacture of rubber products and the marketing of rubber & rubber products.

Research in biotechnology is carried out in the MRB’s research arm, the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM). Research focus covers the following areas:
• Tissue culture and genetic transformation
• Molecular markers and genetics
• Plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology
• Reproductive biology

SBC’s key activities encompass:
• Implementing bio-prospecting programs on Sarawak’s indigenous biodiversity.

Key R&D areas include the discovery and development of natural products, microbial research, bioassays, bioactive compounds for targeted disease or application and the traditional knowledge of Sarawak’s communities’ use of biodiversity.

TPM is one of the world’s most advanced and comprehensive centers for R&D for knowledge-based industries.
