9 more firms get BioNexus status

NINE more biotechnology companies were accorded BioNexus status last month bringing the total to 51, said Malaysian Biotechnology Corp Sdn Bhd (BiotechCorp) chief executive officer Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood. Up until December 2007, there were 42 BioNexus companies with investments totaling RM1 billion and industry workforce of some 1,000 people, he told reporters at the Malaysia Korea BioBusiness Partnering Event 2008 held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. A BioNexus status is equivalent to a Multimedia Super Corridor status where companies get tax breaks and government grants for research. BioNexus companies are mostly from the agribiotech and healthcare sectors.
