DPM Led Malaysia's Largest Delegation To BIO 2007 In Boston

Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razakbrecently led Malaysia’s delegation to BIO International Convention 2007 held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA (May 6-9, 2007). This is Malaysia’s third participation in a BIO event and this year Malaysia sent the largest delegation thus far with approximately 300 delegates.

Malaysia’s participation was organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), led by its Minister, YB Dato’ Sri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis, through its agency, BiotechCorp.

Among the highlights of BIO 1007 was YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib officiating the Malaysian Pavilion at the Exhibition Hall on May 7, 2007. In conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the country’s participation in Boston saw us promoting the country as a great tourism destination, apart from it being an emerging biotechnology centre.

The Malaysia Pavilion adopted the traditional Malay architecture for its main façade to showcase Malaysia’s unique and rich culture, as well as to portray its strong traditional heritage. Technological sophistication was represented in the traditional architecture in the form of a ‘helix’, which was the secondary feature of the Pavilion.

This marriage of tradition and science was the main feature of the Malaysia Pavilion, indicating to visitors that the country is a destination for high-end investment, as well as pleasure. This year, the Malaysian Pavilion attracted more than 3,000 conference participants.

After the opening of the Malaysian Pavilion, the Deputy Prime Minister witnessed the exchange of documents between, among others, BiotechCorp and MEMG International Limited, Mauritius and Avesthagen, India.

Another grand highlight was the Dinner with the Malaysian Community and Students in the US on May 6, 2007. The Dinner was hosted by our Deputy Prime Minister and was attended by approximately 500 Malaysians, including ministers, chief ministers, Malaysian delegates to BIO 2007, senior government officers and the Malaysians in the United States.

The guests were mesmerized by Malaysia’s own local talents who are residing in Boston – Shayna and a group of Malaysian students at Berkeley School of Music – who were invited to perform.

Also during BIO 2007, one-on-one meetings between the Malaysian biotechnology senior officials and top international biotechnology-related companies were held. In addition, a CEO Luncheon was also organized as a networking effort between the Malaysian and international biotechnology fraternity. The Minister of MOSTI presented a very informative talk during the Luncheon which was attended by close to 100 guests.
