YSG Biotech Sdn Bhd is a wholly-owned commercial subsidiary of Yayasan Sabah Group located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Incepted as the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory (PBL) in 1992, this was a collaborative project between the Forestry Division of Yayasan Sabah Group and that of the Centre of International Cooperation for Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD-Foret), France. The main activities undertaken were on the development of in vitro protocols for the multiplication of selected genotypes of a high value timber species, teak, and three fast-growing Acacias species for the pulp and paper industries.
Following more than a decade of research comprising selection, propagation and field-testing of superior clones, the PBL began commercial activities for teak and Acacia hybrids in 2002. The superior performance of our high quality planting materials in trials established abroad thereafter prompted a surge in their demand across the globe to countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Tanzania, and in Central and South America. In 2005, YSG Biotech Sdn Bhd was incorporated as the licensed company for the PBL.
Today, YSG Biotech Sdn Bhd is positioned among the leading professional groups in the tissue-culturing of high quality teak, with an ongoing program for the selection of genotypes for fast growth and superior wood quality. Other ongoing activities for research and commercial purposes are on economically-important cash crops, forestry and horticultural species.
